The Zachary Historic Village, a two block area of downtown, offers a rare picture of neighborhood life in a small town from the waning years of the 19th century through the 1960’s. The Zachary Historic Village has recently been included in the National Register of Historic Places, administered by the National Parks Service. In 1974, the Port Hudson battlefield was designated a National Historic Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior. It joined a select group of properties which have been recognized for their importance in American History. Port Hudson State Historic Site hosts several unique events, including the Battle of Port Hudson re-enactment held annually during the last full weekend of March. Visitors can watch authentically costumed interpreters demonstrate Civil War weapons and equipment.
Zachary’s enthusiastic support of arts and culture enhances the quality of life for its citizens. The formation of an Arts Council and Artist Guild compliments the city’s active historic district. The community understands the importance of arts and is committed to the development of arts through education. Zachary students take advantage of visual and performing arts, music and various cultural experiences.
